Of course that was the 1990's and statistics may be more equal now... but with the current economic situation, I somehow doubt it.

Any insight to why that may be? Seems a strange reason to reduce the 2 year status.
I agreed though the gender gap is still large. Infact with regards to equal pay there was still a 17% gap between men and women 38 (survey in 2008) years after they introduced the equal pay act in 19700 -

The European Court of Justice ruled that the two year service requirement amounted to unlawful sex discrimination and was therefore against European Law.I'm a retired employment solicitor.
