6 months in job any legal rights

Have been in my job just over 6 months delivering goods, myself and one other have been accused of accepting £5 from a customer (very old lady who was very confused) we did'nt before you ask. We were interviewed separtly and suspended. Have our disceplinary meeting next week but think we are going to get the sack ( a couple of months ago we were told two of the drivers would be sacked). Do we have any rights at all as we have not been there that long

Unfortunately as you have less than one years service you have no protection against unfair dismissal.

    Edited to correct mistake

No it hasn't! It is still 12 month's service - I just had a momentary lapse of mental faculties! Sorry! :o

If im remembering correctly , I think I read somewhere that it was being considered to extend the period to two years before an employee had protection against unfair dismissal .

I thought maybe it had been changed already.

Yes you are right. That is one of the things that the current government is proposing.

Although I'm not sure how they see it working given that it used to be two years but was changed to one year following an extensive challenge to the ECJ. The 2 yr rule was held to unlawfully discriminate against female employees who statistically have far less chance of staying in employment for two years compared to their male counterparts.

Of course that was the 1990's and statistics may be more equal now... but with the current economic situation, I somehow doubt it.

    (Apologies for being a geek ;) )
