I had the same problem and didnt want to spend more on the basket than the contents! I eventually found some nice patterned cardboard boxes in Ikea with lids (that you put together yourself). At £1 each I thought these were a pretty good substitute for expensive baskets. I know you said you don't live near an Ikea, but you may find these in other places?
If you get really desperate you could always wrap a shoe box in nice paper, they can look quite good.
