Have just bought a refurbished netbook as a little extra. When I shut it down last night there were 97 windows updates. Is this a record? Does anyone have an explanation. It is Windows XP.

dunno about NO SP's, with only 97 I'd say probably SP2 already installed ;)

97 updates would mean it is a fresh Windows XP with Service Pack 3 install and no updates have been done. I know that for a fact because of the hundreds I've done myself over the last couple of years.

Exactly what I'd expect to see from a laptop that has had the OS recovered with a recovery disc.

I left Ubuntu 10.04 untouched for several months, and had 134 updates (I think it was!) waiting to be installed when next the laptop was powered on.

Are some of those updates security issues?

I have really no idea - I just let them wash over the laptop!

    But probably not.

    I concur.

Did one the other day, fresh install of XP, fresh install of SP3 (no backup option invoked), and 97 "critical" updates were what was available straight after from WU.

More updates were found afterwards, but they were only patches for the so called security updates that were part of the original 97 updates that were found on the first visit.
