Problems with Carbonite freezing computer

I have subscribed to Carbonite to back up stuff on my desktop computer. I know it is supposed to run in the background, but that is not what is happening for me.
It appears to do a full back up at least once every 24 hours, and spends hours a day backing up. When it is backing up my computer keeps freezing, and sometimes crashes.
We've spent literally hours discussing it with Carbonite, who have used software to take over our computer to try and solve the problem on several occasions. They've reinstalled it, checked that our anti spam/virus/whatever provisions aren't affecting it, set it to low priority, and goodness knows what else.
Always they then assure us that it is working perfectly - but of course as soon as they exit, our problems are back.
Have any of you clever people got any ideas please, as it is driving me mad! Many thanks.

Assuming the PC has no hardware faults (it's conceivable that it could be faulty memory, but you would expect to see evidence of this with it freezing when ~not~ running Carbonite), the next thing I'd try is updating the motherboard device drivers - not because it's a highly likely cause but because it doesn't take long to do and has fixed unexplained lockups for me in the past.
It's possible to do this in a limited way via Windows Update, but the most effective way is to download them, if available, from the PC manufacturers website.
If you want to check that the PC's memory doesn't have any faults, Memtest86+ is good, and free to download and use.0 -
Thanks fwor, I'll try all those things.0
