Comodo and Outpost Free are free. I wouldn't even look in the direction of Zonealarm.
- agreed, and a very good point you are making, PrivateFirewall / Outpost & Comodo all ' skin ' the existing windows O/S firewall.
However I think WinXP on SP3 and no mention of the browser as a testing platform leaves a big bit to be desired

windows firewall, no bloat
I think the firewall in XP only blocks unsolicited incoming traffic, and you can't set your own rules (I may be wrong).
If this is the case and you're behind a router, the SPI firewall in it will block this traffic anyway, so there wouldn't be any benefit in using the Windows firewall.
I'd have a look at the Comodo Firewall - but I had to disable Defense+ and change to custom mode immediately after installing, otherwise it failed leak tests and automatically created rules to allow Internet access to applications without prompting!0 -
Thank you everyone - some very interesting points to consider! It's nice to be important.....but it's more important to be nice

You can set any rules [ application / system behavior ] you like, mind you you need to be Spock the son of Vulcan ambassador Sarek to understand its inner workings. If however you ' skin ' it with PrivateFirewall 7 you will soon learn its secrets.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. Outbound software firewalls just add an extra layer of bloat and complexity to a pc, largely redundant if you have a good resident virus scanner and a router.!!
