Hi all, I'm sure this has been mentioned on MSE before but just done a search and can't find any reference to it.
Got a phone call this morning from Virtual PC Doctor (had to ask 3 times to repeat the name of the company before I understood what the caller was saying). The gist of the call was - 'will you switch on your computer and I will guide you through how to get rid of viruses'.
It is a scam.
I've got caller display phone so showed their No. 0253 802 0308
I definitely won't be calling them, but maybe a mod from MSE would? Unless already done!

I got stung by these people on Saturday. I had a phone call from someone saying they were from Microsoft and they were calling about errors on my computer. I had being having computer problems over the last few weeks and had sent several error codes to Microsoft. I foolishly allowed them remote access to my computer and was persuaded to pay £183.99 by Paypal. Only yesterday did a realise that this is a scam and I feel so stupid I could cry! I have contacted them and said I want to cancel and was told that I would only receive £100 refund.0

You may have lost more than that if they had access to your pc0

Id seriously recommend formatting your hard drive and reinstalling windows. Also change all passwords (ebay, email, paypal etc)
As theyve had access to your computer, they could have gotten all passwords off your machine and probably installed something nasty on it:idea:0 -

I would launch a paypal dispute, and give a lot of information about how it follows the standard scam script. I'd try to get all the money back.
They offered a service which was fraudulent in nature so you should be entitled to the full amount. Don't accept their partial refund.0 -

Thanks for the advice. I'd already started a Paypal dispute. I've also had a phone call from one of the agents at Virtual PC Doctor who is adamant that this is not a scam and they will refund me part of the money which I said I won't accept. I ended up having to put the phone down and they keep ringing me back so I've had to put the answer machine on!0 -
Just had an email from Paypal to inform me that they have closed my claim against Virtual PC Doctor and that I won't be receiving a refund. Obviously I'm gutted but not surprised - I'll just have to put the whole thing behind me and learn from the horrendous experience!0
