i am going to make some bench cushions this year and i discovered I could re-use the contents of old duvets - make the inner cushion our of old sheets/pillowcases/shirts to the shape you need, then either stuff bit by bit for the pillow type cushions or sew a couple of layers of the right size pieces of duvet for the bench cushion IYSWIM. I've been able to make lots of cushions to just the right size and shape of my projects - they're also brill for stuffing toys - and I never go short of old duvets as there is always someone wanting to get rid of one (or they're really cheap in some supermarkets)!Jan 2012: CC £2,340.30, 2nd mortgage £22,932, Mortgage £57,5380

foam is very expensive in small quantities. hence making stuff like this is a non starter in many cases.
if you look around you will see many items whereby its cheaper to buy em outright. sometimes far cheaper.Get some gorm.0 -
When I priced foam in the shops / online it was working out way too expensive but I managed to get a massive sheet of foam from a local upholstery wholesaler for only £10. It was only 1 inch thick though ( which was good for my dining chairs). I imagine the thick foam like in those Ikea cushions will be quite expensive so you might have to consider compromising0

i would love to make some bench and chair cushions for our garden furniture, ones like the ikea Vadero, however by the time i buy the foam its going to be more expensive than going to ikea and buying them. Any ideas
Go to Ikea and buy them....?
As Ormus says things like these unless you can get free material and have spare foam from something else, are rarely MSE ideas. What you do get is cushions in the material of your choice of course made to fit exactly to your chairs0 -
Last year I made new covers for my existing garden furniture cushions out of a huge set of curtains I picked up at a boot fair for 50p. Where have you been looking at for buying the foam - I would have thought you can get a thinnish piece of basic foam like that pretty cheaply - you wouldn't need premium foam designed for sofa or anything like that because garden furniture will only ever get fairly limited wear. Ideally you need to be looking at something you can buy off a market stall. I know dunelm sell foam as well - not sure what their prices are like though.0

Also look out for foam things on freecycle - an old foam matress or maybe one of those fold out sofa-chair things that are made of foam - things you could cut up and re-use.0

I did the same. I also took all the dimensions and he cut it into size for me too. Sadly the shop has now shut down though.0 -
