Hi id recommend highlights or a silver shampoo. x0

I'm quite dark and I think blonde would look a bit odd. I wonder about other colouring though - lowlights? Still expensive to maintain though I imagine?
If you are planning to go grey that will involve going light. Maybe gradual highlights over the next year so the transition to grey isn't so extreme. If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0 -
Thanks for all your comments. I am only 42 and wondering if that is too young to be grey!
Back to the "Harmony" question - is there anything like that on the market?
I would say don't do it to yourself, your far to young to be grey regardless of how it looks, how do you think its going to make you feel? are you going to feel frumpy and past it? will you look at other women without grey and still feel confident? how you answer these questions honestly to yourself will help determine if its right for you.
There is a range of grey hair colours that evens out the grey and can give it a kind of opalescent sheen my mil uses this and its lovely, also you would have to change your make up and reassess your wardrobe - best of luck:)Thank you for this site MartinThe time for change has comeGood luck for the future0 -
Aveda used to do a range of shampoos & conditioners that put a hint of colour in your hair. I used to use the Madder Root one that added a red tint. There was one called Blue Malva as well, which I think was for blonde hair. Don't know whether they still make them. I used to get them from QVC but I don't think they do Aveda anymore.
EDIT: They do still make them...

I was going to reconmend a product that removes dye build-up and personally i use that Scott Cornwell product mentioned above quite often; and it works well for me.
I have light to medium dark brown hair and i like to dye it dark brown. Overtime i get a product build up and my hair appears to be pretty much black.
I use the Colour B4 and it removes a large amount of the build up or colour so that i can then dye my hair again to the colour i like.
I think it does depend on what brand dye you use; and certain ones which contain sillicone can melt themselves into the hair cuticle if you use heat on your hair.
As regards the Harmony shampoo - this is one that you can buy in Savers. Costs under two pounds and lasts about six shampoos. I like it to use inbetween permanant dyes to add a bit of lushness and shine.I'm so boring, my clothes wanna keep someone else warm, someone cooler0 -
I stopped dying my hair three years ago and have dark brown hair with quite a lot of grey, I am 46.
I use Toni and Guys brunette shampoo which has colour in it and it covers up the grey with a nice chestnutty colour. Most people are amazed when I say I dont dye my hair.and it save a fortune in dye. It is about £5.00 a bottle but its often on special offer in Boots.

Would you colour your hair if you could do it cheaply? I mean by yourself or with the help of a friend. It really is very easy to do a root touch up. You should not apply an all over colour every few weeks unless you keep your hair very short.
Anyway I will give your the instructions on how to do a root touch in case you want them.
You will need a box of colour, a tail comb, a non metallic bowl and a tinting brush.
1. Mix up colour as per instructions in a non metallic bowl.
2. Starting at your forehead comb hair backwards towards the crown and apply the colour all around the hairline from ear to ear. Then lifting the hair do the same thing around the back of your head again from ear to ear.
3. Make a centre parting and apply colour. Continue the parting down to the back of the neck. As you apply the colour the hair "behaves" and remains where parted.
4. Make a parting from your crown to one ear and apply the colour.
5. Do the same towards the other ear.
6. Now your head is divided into 4 sections and you part the hair evenly in each individual section and apply the colour. Begin with a back section at the crown, make a parting an inch or so wide apply the colour and let the hair fall forward.
7. Leave the colour on for the required time and then wash off and condition.
This shows you how BUT this woman is using bleach and I would not advise you to do that yourself. Tints cannot really go wrong but bleach can so just watch her application technique:

I am now 50 ( well, in a couple of weeks) and I have been dying my hair since I was 15. There really is nothing to it, especially nowadays. I use the Nice N Easy brand, the permanent one. Just stand naked in your bathroom. squeeze it all over your head, rubbing it in and pulling to the ende ( I have long hair ), not forgetting to wear the gloves of course!! Get in the bath, read or relax for 25 minutes then slide under the water gently rubbing your head. Head up out of the water...use the conditioner all over. Get out of the bath and rinse hair under the sink tap. Honestly, there is nothing to it.0
