Help for complete novice

Hi
I have a smallish front garden with 2 small patches of grass, borders and a conifer and another large bush. I have bulbs come up each year ..planted before I moved here, I hasten to add.
I have no idea about gardening and at the moment am paying someone £20 a fortnight from March to October to basically look after it for me.
I am now on an economy drive and realise this is an easy area to cut back but do not have a clue as to what I should be doing.
Obviously I know to mow the lawn etc but how do I keep it looking as nice as he does, and how often should I be maintaining.
I'm sorry if this is a ridiculous question and I can take pics if needed.
thanks in advance
Karen

I think your best bet as a beginner gardener would be to go to the local library & borrow some gardening books. A basic book will explain all the different things you need to do at different times of the year & you'll also be able to look at the pictures & get an idea of how you'd like your garden to look.

I would say that the price you are paying is very cheap, and that you should take things slowly. what do you want from your garden?

Could be false economy. How much income could you achieve in the same time your gardener earns £10? Plus you'd need to buy tools, take time reading-up etc. and you'll have the dry hands and broken nails!
