Declined for a basic account?

My husband applied over the weekend for a Noriwch & Peterborough basic account and was declined. He has had some credit problems and is in a DMP, he was looking to move his sole account to them as they were recommended by his DMA.

I thought basic accounts were open to all, regardless of credit history?

Any ideas?

Barclays and the Co-op will open a basic account even for bankrupts - think they should be able to do something for your husband.

Thanks for your help. Did some digging with the FSA and apparently they shouldn't have declined him a basic account. He has one CCJ which we found out has been incorrectly applied so he has got to go to have it set aside in December but a mutual friend has multiple CCJ's and is able to get a current account! Will look into Barclays, I had awful trouble with the Co-op so it is unlikely he'd look into going to them!
