Lung cancer isn't hereditary Peter, soI'd be very surprised if this is the reason why you couldn't get the cover you wanted. Have the insurance company actually told you this is the reason or are you guessing? What type of cover did you get turned down for? Critical illness? Does your wife smoke?

It may depend on age at onset with the cancer... if they were young (i think under 50 or 55) you maybe looking at some type of rating or exclusion.

You could try the likes of Friends Provident or one of the Friendly Societies, they are usually more lenient.

Building Societies (and banks) are the most expensive place to buy life assurance because they take the highest commission which is reflected in the rates they charge. You will also have access to only 1 company, so they will probably not be the most competative. So you get hit twice, once by a (probably) more expensive company and once by (definately) more expensive rates from that company.

You would be far better off seeing an IFA who will get you better rates, has the market to source the product from and will probably be able to steer you better in relation to any health issue.
  • You should hit the net and read around the underwriting criteria the insurers themselves use and what they load and when. Once you have assimilated that, it is likely you can fit your application in without too much worry. You can also speak to the underwriters fist. Cavendish has their phone numbers on its site (prices heavily discounter using cavendish).
