VM to Sky Talk - number porting?

Hi guys,

We gave out 30 day cancellation notice to Virgin Media the other day because we are changing to Sky. We will be getting sky tv, phone and broadband.

We moved into this house 10 years ago and there was a BT line installed. We moved to virgin and kept the same number.

Now we are moving to Sky, can we take our number with us?
Virgin retentions team member said this wasn't possible. I explained to him that the number was originally BT's. They didn't supply it to me. the guy at sky said he was not sure.

The engineers are coming on monday to install the sky tv and tuesday to install/activate the Sky Talk line.

I've browsed my fingers off and cannot find a definite answer.
Anyone know the facts? Shall I stand my ground with the egnineer and tell him I want to keep my number?

Thank you

Sonny

ps. I have no idea what it is, but do I need to get a MAC code off Virgin before the 30 day cancellation period is up?

The engineer that turns up for the phone is a BT/Openreach engineer and the number you get will be the number on the (Sky) provision order, if its not the one you currently have with VM there wont be anything the OR engineer can do about that, havent Sky told you what your number is going to be in advance, after all the OR engineer will know what its going to be, why dont you ?

Nope, the guy on the phone at Sky didn't give my my new number. Just my sky account number and sky email address.

I hope to have secured a good deal and I'm hoping I get something in the post with a tariff breakdown.

A new number is not the end of the world, but it would help a lot if I could keep the number I've had since moving here 10 years ago.

On a smaller note, I also here that should I want to leave Sky in 12 months (fixed contract period ends), then I may have to pay a fair amount (50-100 quid) if I want to move to a phone company that uses the now 'sky owned' line. Although, if I do move, it will prob be back to Virgin who own their own line anyway...

I wouldn't bank on OR turning up the day after the Sky installer (they're not 'engineers') The TV install is invariably some days or even weeks ahead of the OR schedule, which Sky have no control over whatsoever.
NB: there is no charge for a return to donor on a Sky LLU line, however you will have to go back to BT on a 12m line rental contract, since it's not possible to go direct from one LLU to another. This is assuming that you are getting a Sky LLU service. If you're on Sky Connect (non-LLU), then you're going to be very disappointed with your broadband.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thanks guys. Really appreciate your help. Nearest exchange straight line distance is 1.71km. It is sky easynet enabled. LLU.
If we can get genuine 3-5mb, I will be happy.

You were spot on, the sky installer is coming on the 7th of March (this Monday). The BT OpenReach engineer is coming on the 8th...of APRIL! to put in the sky talk line and broadband. I mistakenly thought it was the 8th of this month.

I have one massive problem and wanted to ask you 1 quick question please.

I gave virgin my 30 day notice a week or so ago. Everything Virgin ends on 2nd April. The sky line will be - fingers crossed - in on the 8th of April.

That means 6 or so days without a phone line and internet. Internet is not a worry as such but my mom is having an operation at the end of the month and it's vital for family to stay in touch with
    me on a landline.

Do you think Virgin will let me 'un-cancel' my 30 day notice. I don't want to go on an 18month contract with them, obviously. But I can
undo the cancellation and just continue my service with them. Then, in a week or so give them the 30 day cancellation notice again.

Does that sound ok to you? I cannot think of anything else. I am just hoping they only charge for an extra few days rather than for an extra month.

    Thank you

    Sonny

No need to un-cancel. Just change your date for cessation of service!
