Credit Card Non Payment - 3 Years - bad credit?

Hi, Just wondered if i could get some help and advice about credit cards issues ive had.
I had 2 credit cards about 4 years ago, after a year i stopped paying them, bad i know, was just a very difficult few years with money. anyway, ive not been chased for the money, but i am now in a better sitution and want to start paying them back.
I just wondered how i firstly would go about this? and secondly, as i would now have back credit, is there anyway to resolve this? and if i pay them back will this make my credit better again and how long will this take?
Thanks

Check your credit report - this will tell you where you have outstanding credit, if they have defaulted/been to court, and how to get into contact with your creditors. If they defaulted (which they most certainly will have done) you will have difficulty obtaining any credit for 6 years from the date of default - you would need to look into sub prime deals if you required further credit.
Google Experian, Equifax and Call Credit (I think this is the 3rd??) and check your credit reports with all three. They offer a free 30-day trial if you've not used them before, otherwise you can request a copy of your credit report for about £2.
