My car needs a new distributor

I want to make sure I buy the correct distributor part for my car. What info do I need to make sure I buy the correct one? I thought I read online this morning that I will need the VIN number but I can't find that website anymore so don't know if I just imagined it?

Are you planning on buying it from a shop or will it be online?
If you go into a shop, it might be advisable to take your V5 (registration document), or a copy of it.
This shows the VIN, the engine number and year of manufacture of the car so it should have all the info that the retailer will need.0 -
Dizzy? no-one's fitted those for over 10 years..... Are you sure?“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

3 out of our 4 have them. (well, the 4 petrol ones, the diesels don't).
What's the car?0 -
Don't laugh. Its an M reg Rover 623GSI. It is extremely reliable and I've had it for 9 years. It never gives me any problems until now that is.0

Get on the EuroCarParts site. Should only need the reg number (if they have one)
5t.What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
You may struggle to find one.
What's the problem with it?
You could try

Try bbareman dot com, but think carefully about sinking money into what will probably now be a worthless car.0

The engine turns over but won't start. Two AA guys both said it needed a new ignition module inside the distributor. A new ignition module was fitted but car still doesn't start.. I have been advised that its likely to be the distributor and to change it.
I also read online that a classic sign of needing a new distributor is a squealing noise when the car first starts up - which is what my car did until it wouldn't start at all yesterday.0 -
A squealing noise on startup is actually more likely to be a worn fanbelt or power steering belt rather than the distributor. I've never known a distributor make a noise loud enough to be heard over an engine starting.0
-
Coil is another suspect on these, and they can damage the module, then the new module.0
