'Turbocash' - free accounting software. Any recommendations?

I'm pondering getting this open-source accounting software instead of paying hundres of quids for Sage or Quickbooks.

Have any MSE'rs used this? If so - can you post some feedback (or even PM me?) please before I take the plunge and download it (is a whopping great file!)?

Thanks in advance (again!).

I had a quick look (I am doing an accounting course and it seems to tick most of the boxes)

Give it a go (maybe use an excel worksheet as backup to record cashbook transactions just in case you hit problems.)

I will download it later and have a look if you like and will post back later.

WOW! Thank you! That is very kind of you indeed.
  • Also found this little entry on wikipedia

I really like wiki entries, they're independent and usually reliable sources of information - I send my kids to there now rather than using MS Encarta

  • Hi there again

Well, I've had a look at Turbocash and. to be honest, I don't like it. It doesn't seem to be intuitive at all - but that could be just because I am used to using Sage LIne 50.

What I can tell you is that it doesn't seem to do VAT returns and doesn't look like it rolls over from one year to the next very well. Also it doesn't seem to have the facility to run journal entries - those entries needed when you haven't got a book of original entry to refer to(eg cash book may not be used to adjust for figure reversals)

If I had a business and was looking for an accounting package that was relatively easy to use, similar to accountants software - making handover easier, industry standard - I would opt for either SageLine 50 or Sage Instant Accounts (i know a few people running this second one with no problems).

For the sake of £109 + Vat I would go for the basic sage instant accounts. This seems to tick all the boxes for small businesses.

I hope I've been of some help to you.

    Regards

I played with it some time back and couldn;t get on with it.

One small warning, when I signed up to download it I used a unique email address that hasn't been used anywhere else. This address has since received spam and viruses.

    Thanks, Mikewebs and Lorian.

I think I abide by your comments and give this a wide berth!
