Cutting Toddler's Hair

Can anyone offer some advice on how I should go about cutting my son's hair? Where I live they charge 5pounds a cut!! I've brought some clippers. The longest attachment is 18mm. I did do an all over previously but found this too short. It's since grown out and I wanted to trim the edges to make it look tidier but have mucked it up. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Or does anyone know of any websites where they have step by step illustrated foolproof instructions?

I'm not after anything complicated. Just a baisc boy's hair cut.

Thanks.
Dummie

i did my 14mth old boy last night, it was his first haircut!!

i just tried to give you step by step instructions and i have to say i found it impossible. could you not splash out this time round and watch the hairdresser on how she does it so you can pick up some pointers for next time?
also our local hairdressing college do cheap haircuts do you have one of those near by?
It only seems kinky the first time.. :A
  • I wouldnt do it yourself ..... Id never forgive myself if it went too short. i take my son to the hairdressers and pay £4.50 ..... because the barbers would just shave it off and turn him into a valley commando. But i like my sons hair longer as it is curly.

If you do go to the barbers as above poster said try and watch how they do it.good luck.
  • i do mu own hair with some clippers :p number 2 on the sides and spiky on top
  • you can get longer guards for the clippers we use no.8 for my son.
remember to go all angles to tidy it up and then trim at the ends/sides.
no bother - try on a chap first!

i thought you could use a comb with the clippers. take sections of hair and pull it out and clip at the length you want and just do that all over, although with toddlers your bound to miss bits. i did hairdressing at school so luckily i dont do a dewhurst butchers job on my kids lol :D

it is hard to explain in writing though.

Like Crispeater says, if you have a local college it might be worth giving them ring.
Our local college has a price list of all hair and beauty things, really cheap too, and don't worry it wont be some first time trainee let loose on you DS hair, at the college near us it's NVQ level 3 trained hairdressers.
    Good luck

  • My son wouldn't look right with a shaved head, so instead my hairdresser gave me some tips on how to do it.

In the bath, with soap suds make hair into peaks and cut into diagonally and just keep doing it all round, rinse and see how even it looks when wet. The areas that look slightly longer than others, you can peak the hair while still wet and trim.

It does work. Occasionally you may find you need to do some extra trimming, so take advantage of time in the highchair.

Well i tried taking DS to have his hair cut a couple of weeks ago, he came back with what resembles a mullet, he wont let them use clippers and fidgets somuch she couldnt finish it!
I bought some clippers and ended up using the scissors to yidy it up myself, its a nightmare!
Next time i'll try the bath trick!
