computer crashing

I have had my computer for about 3 years without much problem until this week. Its started to crash without any warning. Its done it 4 times in 2 days now.

When it crashes a blue screen comes up with the message referring to a file aswsp.sys

Any suggestions please?

What code do you get from the BSOD , are you using Avast and Windows Vista, and have you updated Avast in the last 3 days?

I am unfamiliar with where I would find the BSOD code.

OK,I am having memory problems tonight re XP go too Start Settings/Control Panel/Administrative Tools then select Event Viewer and System Events. Look for an Error which should say BSOD or Recovered from
that will tell you hopefully, otherwise when it next happens write down the codes before you restart. Did this happen before the AVAST update or after ?

    Id recommend uninstalling AVAST

    reboot
    Download CCLEANER
    http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/slim
Run the CLEANER scan (UNTICK 'cookies')
Then run the REGISTRY scan (Backup the registry when it asks)

    Install the latest Avast 6

    aswsp.sys

This is one of the new drivers in avast 4.8 supporting the self-protection feature of avast.

    Uninstall Avast, and reinstall it.

Reinstall from the website as they will have the latest version with all the updates included.

Why on earth not ??? Especially as there have been known issues with it recently, which have now been fixed. AND if you are running an older version (4.8, 5) when there is a new improved one out there ??? The advice above is sound, and you did ask ;)
