CREDIT CARD PROTECTION for partial purchase!!!

Hello! Following the article about the card protection we have decided to pay just the deposit for our holiday on john lewis credit card. The deposit was £400. The remaining balance of £3099 we paid by bank transfer. In this way we have saved ourselves almost £90 for the credit card charges. Well, I have called John Lewis to ask them about the holiday protection and they were clear that they will cover just £400 paid by the card! Is this correct. I tried to look on the web about section 75 protection that applies to my holiday payment but couldnt find much. Is John Lewis right or they are just after my full payment on their credit card... I do not wish to become a sceptic so I'll really appreciate somebody's full reply and any link to a law... thanks G

I dont know what you mean by holiday protection.

S75 allows you to make a claim against the retailer and/or card provider if there has been a breach of contract. You would be able to make a claim for the full amount against the card provider as long as your deposit was over £100, however you do have to evidence a breach of contract. So it is not 'holiday protection' - there has to be a failure on the part of the holiday provider. ie - if your holiday is affected by a volcano stopping flights, that would not be a 'breach of contract' and you would have no claim.

I think the OP is confusing Travel Insurance with the Section 75 Credit Card insurance, or has just not given a good example - if you pay £100 or more of a payment for something on a credit card, you are covered for up to £30 000 if the item did not arrive as ordered or is defective or the seller vanishes etc- end of. John Lewis staff who said you are only covered for the amount of the deposit are talking complete rubbish.
However, holiday payments are somewhat more difficult, as most of the time, it is not Section 75 you will need but rather your Travel Insurance Policy - there is a huge difference between the two.

Also OP, depends on how you booked the holiday. If through a tour operator then fine, but if booking through a travel agent then John Lewis credit card (via Section 75) would be repsonsible for purely providing a ticket and no issues in relation to the holiday itself.

I have see the article... but why would J lewis talk rubbish? i cannot believe that somebody before didnt think of partial credit card purchase: spending as less as possible on card charges ( over £100) and having a full refund in case should something goes wrong?!! are you guys doing this already??? any other article or even case (law) where this worked? thanks G&G
