Laptop Choice From Ebuyer

I bought a laptop from Ebuyer that is faulty and they have agreed to replace it with a laptop of equal value - £856 as they no longer stock the HP HDX16. The laptop is for my daughter who mostly uses it to surf, e-mail, watch DVD's and watch Youtube, does some word processing, presentations and some picture editing, basically nothing hugely intensive. She ocassionaly plays some games, but not very often. I am looking for advice and thoughts on the choices of laptop that I have from Ebuyer

From the original laptop spec she has the following requirements:-

Screen size - about 16" (a bit bigger or smaller is OK)
HDMI port as she likes to plug into the the lounge TV
Web Cam essential!
Storage capacity - 320GB was plenty
Multi card reader useful but regularly uses an SD card
Good quality sound is preferable - original had Stereo speakers and built in subwoofer
Fingerprint reader was nice to have but not essential
Bluetooth was never used
Bluray player was not used, but DVD essential

Based on price and trying to match the above I have narrowed it down to the following:-

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/237750 Asus N73JG-TY041V
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/241436 Samsung RF710
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/253089 Sony Vaio EB4X0E/BQ
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/251968 Samsung R780
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/254085 Toshiba Satellite Pro L670-103
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/244356 Toshiba Tecra A11-1EG
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/241876 Toshiba Portege R700-1DG

And to get some debate going :-

All thoughts and comments would be welcomed and any other suggestions as long as they can be purchased from Ebuyer.

Not being funny but those laptops are massively overspecced for that use. If it were me I'd get the replacement, sell it BNIB sealed for the same price and buy a £350 laptop that will do all that, a decent netbook, tablet, iPad or smart phone for mobility and throw the remaining cash at her car insurance or whatever.

Out of you list my personal preference would be the Sammy 780.

  • spakker - Thanks for the comment, but missed the key point that I have to go through Ebuyer, so Amazon is not an option unless I go down the route suggested by Toxteth_OGrady.

Toxteth_OGrady - Great advice as always. I like your thinking.

I agree that the spec is overkill for her uses, but when the original laptop was purchased we thought that she was going to get into the photography a lot more and video editing. However, this seems to have gone on the back burner. I figure I might as well spend the max I can as it is at Ebuyers cost.

If you discover a problem with something you’ve bought, you need to decide how serious you think the problem is (or if, for example, there are several problems).

If you want to give it back and get your money back, under the Sale of Goods Act you have the right to ‘reject’ an item that is not of ‘satisfactory quality’.

But you must act quickly: you have only a limited time – usually only a few weeks – to reject something.

I dont know how long you've had it but may be an option to follow so you can go elsewhere and get a cheaper model and have spare cash?

  • Hello,

Instead of the HP HDX16, you could try Acer Aspire 5741Z Laptop on Ebuyer - quickfind code 242522.

    Hope that helps :)

As someone who spends their day fixing laptops I'd recommend the Asus as that brand seems a lot more reliable than any of the others. Our workshop is full of Vaios, Dells, Acers, Samsungs, HPs and Compaqs.

Obviously, these brands sell a lot more than Asus do so there will be more incidences of these appearing in our workshop. Even so, most of the faults relate to the graphics chips, hard disk failures or complete motherboard failures. Whichever, one you do choose, I'd recommend extending the warranty.
