Could you imagine how restricted this would be. If someone hijacks your wireless connection and downloads illegal stuff, you can be held legally responsible.

The same laws would apply to a 'free' government wi-fi. Therefore, it would have to be so filtered as to be hardly worth it. No newsgroups or p2p.

You would still end up using your broadband at home, so it would only really end up being used by people driving around with laptops like CCStar said. It's bad enough seeing people texting whilst driving never mind surfing the net!

Can you imagine the cost of implementing something like this, when has our government ever done something within a sensible budget, the amount of wasted money is truely staggering.

Just think how much money it will cost for the 3 year long 'feasability' study that governments have to go through. So when they do decide to set it up, it will be based on 3 year old technology which nobody's laptops will work with anymore.

Sorry for the rant, but it annoys me that so much money is wasted by this government, think millennium dome or even, dare I say it, the olympics...

Good point about people using laptops whilst driving I can imagine it now, its already bad enough idiots using mobiles whilst doing so, the government are great at bringing out new laws, but enforcing them well they rarely do.

Look at the poor guy in Liverpool videoing gangs whilst damaging his property the other day, Police didn't come out when they set about him.

We would have enough Police if the money and fines were increased to pay for them.

Its a crazy idea the free wifi, they would be hell on if money was siphoned off for this stupid scheme. If people want national wifi pay why don't they pay for it, paying for it via taxes is a misuse of public funds.

This would be another scheme where the affluent would benefit the most, I much rather poor/pensioners have free computers then this.

Or you could get a wireless card from ebay for a tenner and tear up your broadband contract...

I think people need to take a deep breath and think for a minute...

Free wireless everywhere = FREE INTERNET EVERYWHERE!!!

I does not matter if you "do not have a laptop", you bloody well would if you could use the internet everywhere, wouldn't you?

This would be great, if it happens. Just think:

Say goodbye to mobiles phones and landlines - VoIP would be everywhere.
Say goodbye to broadband, ok wifi may not be as fast yet but it not far off.
Say goodbye to fax machines, Just scan and email, anywhere!
Say Goodbye to radio and tv, just streem 1000s of channels from all over the world, COOL!!

The internet is getting faster every day, WIFI is getting better every, err, well, soon anyway:)

I for one will give my support to this campaign, I think you all should to.

    Vince.

Yes, a great step forward and shopping on the web is very big business so there would be no shortage of advertisers willing to pay for it and all the wingers can find something else to moan about.
    best wishes deepseeker :rotfl:
  • Cheer up you lot, it may never happen!
  • I think this will be a bad idea, we get taxed enough as it is.

Ok I get everyone's point but, why should I pay taxes for the doctor if I never go, why should I pay road tax if I walk everwhere. I mean if you think about it alot of people pay taxes on things they never use and it helps the country as a whole move forward.

I would love free wifi, if there was, I would no longer have a telephone line in my house no more of those annoying cold calls. I think it's a wonderfull idea.

p.s I don't actually walk everywhere I was just using it as an example and I do occasionally go to the doctors when I can get an appointment that is
    Nice to save.

    Not a good idea.

For a start it would decimate the home ISP business, putting thousands out of work.

Secondly, having everyone on one giant network is a very bad thing, security-wise.

Thirdly, the WiFi would have to assign an IP address to each device online. Using a Class A subnet, that would give a max of 16,581,375 addresses. That would be your limit as to how many devices are online at once. IPv6 will solve this problem, but at the expense of upgrading the entire Internet....
