National Insurance Credits

Hi
I have a question that I was hoping someone may be able to help with. I requested my NI contribution record from HMRC and this shows that I have 4 years where no contributions were made and no credits applied. These are 4 years that I was studying full time at university. I do recall getting a letter years ago saying that I could pay for the contributions but ignored it at the time as I was young and not too interested and busy paying off student loans etc. Now I am seeking to do something about it but because it was sometime ago I am advised it is 'too late to pay'. This got me thinking however, is there no type of NI credit for full time students? I note that I seem to have credits from when I had just turned 16 and was studying A levels but just don't have any when at uni. Does anyone know anything about this and whether this is standard?

Yes that is correct you would not receive any NI credits whilst at University.0
