Thanks for all your replies :D

I've started washing in luke warm water, using sulphate free shampoo and using Batiste between washes, I managed 4 days between washes which is amazing as I used to wash my hair every day or every other day at the most!! We have extremely hard water here in Suffolk:( and a water softener is definitely not an option.
I found the colour depositing shampoo and conditioner didn't make a blind bit of difference except to the colour of my bathroom:mad:
So it looks like carry on as I am and a semi permanent now and again is the answer. Thanks again :T

With the colour depositing, have you tried the superdrug version? they are really a lot deeper in colour and work well if you leave them in for a minute or two before rinsing and conditioning.

Good luck with the semi though, hope that one day they do design a red that is perminant! (Am bright red too:cool:)

Hi i had much the same problem as you and found using Batiste really did help as over washing just strips the colour. i used Aussie shampoo too.

    Hi

I used to be a hairdresser, and it is as others have said because your hair is porous , and red colours dont hold well anyway.
You are best to put a permanent colour on, then every wash use either a semi permanemt colour or a coloured mousse. Eventually you will get a build up of colour which won't wash out so quickly, then if you have regular trims too and get rid of the hair that was previously coloured blonde it should hold better.

I have been told that using conditioner will take the colour out, is that true? I'm not sure my hair would like that idea!!
I just washed it as going out tonight, I used water as cold as I could bear, and my SLS/silicone free s&c, and I'm sure the leakage wasn't as bad as it had been.

Conditioner takes it out? Who told you that? AFAIK conditioner deposits things onto hair, like silicones and other 'cones, oils and etc but doesn't strip hair: that tends to be what the shampoo does (hence looking for SLS/sulfate free and this helping).

The semi idea is one that others on the makeupalley boards use and have good results with and if I could be bothered I'd do this too! I use the Superdrug wash-in-wash-out tubes, they last a good few weeks and do make a difference, I don't notice my roots as much either!

My old hairdresser told me that!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: I thought it seemed unlikely at the time but didn't question it. I mentioned I fancied going red and thats what she said. I don't use her anymore!
  • I still recommend using Country Colours & botanicals shampoo & conditioner for red heads.

With the country colours you don't need to pre-bleach the hair & because it's semi, it damages the hair less than permanent dyes.

I've also noticed that the colour stays fresher and vibrant the more times you dye your hair with this combination. Personaly, I'm not a fan of the veggie colours like crazy colours ect..as they never seen to stop washing out & they seem to dye everything perfectly but your hair.

I may be a bit late to this but thought I'd post anyway. I have been dying red for many years and definitely find conditioner strips the colour. I suspect this is because both hot water and sulphate shampoos open the cuticle. I always use a leave-in conditioner instead of a wash-out which makes a massive difference as obviously there is less water involved. I tried many branded shampoos for red hair and found every one stripped my hair and none left a noticable colour deposit.

On hair care forums there is a lot of talk of oils stripping colour and I certainly find overnight intensive conditioning does this. Coconut oil applied before colouring is reputed to protect from damage, and diluted vinegar rinse afterwards reputed to aid colour retention. HTH.

I think I've finally found the best combination of things to make the colour last.
I use XXL Red Passion (?) colourant, wash and condition with Naked Richness Revealed S&C (no sulphates or silicones), and I rinse with cool water.
This seems to be much better, and I have noticed that when I'm rinsing there is almost no colour coming out with the product now. I wash my hair probably 3 times a week and it still looks a lovely bright, deep red :D

Thanks for all your advice everyone :j
