Help! Red colour still washing out.

My lovely Ruby Red hair is going to be ghastly pink hair soon I fear
Whenever I wash it the colour comes out
I've tried Nice & Easy and Schwartzkopf dyes, same thing happened with both. I used a sulphate free shampoo and it still came out.
I'm wondering if I should get some of that "Colour B4" stuff then start again. Do you think that would work? My hair was blonde before it was red, (coloured) and a mousy blonde naturally (well actually its probably grey by now, I daren't stop the colouring to find out:eek:)
My hair is cut regularly and in good condition as I had it cut quite shorter when I went red, to get rid of the over bleached ends.
This is so frustrating  Any advice about the Colour B4 stuff?

Red will always fall out, its something scientific about the colour particles in red being bigger than the other colours, so it doesn't absorb as well into the hair. I have had red hair of one description or another, all my adult life, and there is no cure. I do find the L'oreadl shamoo and condtitioner for coloured hair very good though for keeping the shine, and believe it or not the cheapy cheapy Tesco basic stuff. It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0

Have you tried natural henna?0

I use a red shade (I think it's called Grand Canyon) by Schwarzkopf Country Colours. Although it's a semi I find it dosen't actually wash out & remains very bright. The only way I know my hair needs dying again, is when my roots start to show through.
I also find Boots Botanicals shampoo & conditioner for red hair keeps the colour looking fresh and rich.

Found this. Hope it gives good advice.0 -
Yes it is due to the particles being too large for the hair and so colour will continue to wash out- less and less each time but it will fade alot.
I use a colour depositing shampoo, they are easy to find, Superdrug sell wash-in-wash-out for 99p (small pot, lasts a few washes). Aveda, John Freida and I think panetene have similar products in 300ml-ish tubs and then there are those that re-dye over the top with a semi every week or so.0 -
My daughter uses colours from Stargazer, these go on pre-lightened hair, so don't contain any peroxide.
The colour still fades/washes out, but she will often buy another bottle and mix some with her conditioner so with each wash, it helps to boost the colour a bit.

I had my hair stripped in the salon from black to a red colour a few weeks ago and have been using Aussie Colour Mate shampoo and conditioner.
Really pleased as the colour is still looking good.

I second this. Other than using colour depositing shampoo and washing your hair as few times as possible in cold/cool water there's not much you can do, so your best bet is to use a bright semi-permanent dye that simply comes out of a bottle. That way you can simply add them in to your shampoo/conditioner to boost the colour between dying.
I recommend Special Effects dye, which is also available on the link whatatwit posted. I find it has the best staying power.0 -
I've found the herbal essences coloured hair shampoo and conditioners the least vicious when it comes to washing the colour out."It was not my intention to do this in front of you. For that, I'm sorry. But you can take my word for it, your mother had it comin'."

It will also depend on the condition of your hair before it was coloured. Porous hair will release alot of colour when being washed, it's a bit like the hair not being 'sealed ' IYSWIM? A bit like a sponge.0

Also just to add: much of the time its not just the shampoo thats causing the fading, its the water! Hard water can add to fading, you can buy water softeners but these do cost an arm and a leg so otherwise reducing washing and maybe a bit of baptise until your scalp gets used to the reduction.0
