Overdrawn After Charges = Further CHarges

Hi All,

Firstly, long time lurker here, hello! Read some really informative posts on this site, I particularly love some of the old style thrifty money saving tips :)

I'll try to keep this simple. I opened a bank account with Santander, however in the first month work were unable to set up my wages to this new account. The welcome letter I had gave a 9 digit account number, but didn't state to remove the first digit. A bit stupid if you ask me but that's another rant.

Anyway, whilst my wages didn't go in, all of my DD's had transferred over and so went out of the account. For this I got charged an overdraft fee of £5 a day which resulted in charges of around £90 that I simply couldn't afford.

I phoned Santander and explained it was a teething problem with the new account, they could see that my salary was now transferred, and could they waive the charges. NO! They blamed it on my work and as a goodwill gesture refunded £25.

So you all know the scenario - the next month, the charges take me overdrawn, so they again charge me the £5 overdrawn fee. This happened in a continuous cycle, in 4 months I paid well over £500 in charges. Santander would not do a thing. I phoned up and pleaded with them. I said 'look, I don't want the old charges back, please just don't charge me this one month and you can see that then I'll be back on the straight and narrow'. Nothing except one more measly 'goodwill' refund of £25.

Eventually this couldn't carry on so I changed back accounts so NOTHING was going in or out. When I left it it was in credit however later that month charges took it overdrawn again. Now we get to my question - I was under the impression that if it is bank charges, rather than a transaction, that cause you to go overdrawn, then you cannot incur any further charges. However Santander have continued to charge me so approximately another £150 a month in charges is going onto the overdraft!

Can anybody clarify the rules on this and clarify if they can do this? I want to have it out with them either in branch or over the phone but I want to be armed with the correct facts.

Sorry for the long post, thanks for any help.

All I can suggest is that you make a formal complaint that they gave you an incorrect account number. After all, why should you have the knowledge to translate their letters?
