Gas/Electric Cold Callers

I just had a salesman from a certain British energy company knock on my door, to inform me I was paying too much for renting the meters. Now since I'm with a different company for gas and electric I wondered how he'd know such a thing, but he asked to come in and look at the meters so he could see if we were paying too much.

I told him that wouldn't be possible, but he was a bit too insistent, so I decided to point out the No Cold Callers sign on my door. He then started getting a bit argumentative, so I closed the door and phoned the company to complain :p

Now I'm wondering if maybe I over-reacted, would you have done the same or just ignored it? And also is there really an extra meter surcharge for non-British Gas customers?

I think you under-reacted! Didn't Martin Lewis say in the last series of Watchdog that for power suppliers it's now illegal for them to cold call where a sign is displayed? Don't quote me on that though.
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

The utility salesman will have a print out of all the address that are their customers so that they know whose door to knock on.

I agree that it's bad form for them to ignore a cold caller sign so acceptable for you to give them some verbal. (Now I'm going to get it from those who say the salesman is just doing their job, better than being on the dole, and because they are employed as a shark they have the right to call on you.)

Completely agree. If anyone has a go at you, then they are in the wrong :)
