Right what you could do is pick up an HC1 form (available at Drs, Dentists, chemists) and apply for help with health costs on a low income basis.
In the meantime keep your appointment letter and train tickets, and when the HC2 (full help) or HC3 (part help) arrives, you can then claim it back, within a month I think.
Or I think you can apply for a refund at the same time as the certificate.
Even on limited help you should get some of your fare back, I have an HC3 and have to pay the first £28.

Also is it possible to book your tickets online now to see if you can get a little off the fare?

You can still fill it out and apply, if there is not a box labelled "widows pension" for you to fill in the amount then there should be a section "other sources of income", so you can put the details down there.
