Sign up for a free electrical wiring check worth £75 from Southern Electric at www.freewiringcheck.co.uk. Just select 'get it now', enter contact details, submit and Southern Electric will contact you to agree an appointment.

Offer available for both customers and non-customers of Southern Electric.

You will need to enter the promotional code 'MAREAQ' on the website to get the free offer.

Conditions (not on website that I can see but in a leaflet that I got thru my door this morning. Suggest check with Southern Electric when they contact you to confirm that it won't charge you anything) apply though to be eligible for free check :
  • Your property must be older than 20 years and
  • Have an old fuse box and not an up-to-date one.
Examples of old fuse boxes are :

You can also contact Southern Electric for the free offer on 0845-0702056 but this isn't a freephone number for most people. You will need to quote the promotional code as well.

Hope this helps someone.

Update : This offer is not available in all areas of the UK as some postings below confirm. Suggest trying the above to see if you can get the free wiring check and hopefully you will be eligible.

I have to admit to being suspicious when someone who offers re-wiring services offers to do a "free" wiring check.

It is available in my area, but if I want my wiring checked I think I would rather go to someone who is independent and not trying to sell a service.

Thanks for confirming. I will amend my OP to reflect what you have said.

Fair enough but you don't have to agree to any work with them after they have inspected your property.

They will produce a report with recommendations, which you can follow up by invesitigating on the internet, getting an independent review to confirm or just ignore what they say. There may also be nothing wrong as well; although I'm sure that they will go out of their way to highlight something.
  • Round by me one of the electrical contractors spawned from the old distribution companies is offering the same service.

They won't test anything important for free, the reason they say that you must have one of the types of consumer unit pictured is that these all contain BS3036 fuses (rewireable type). They will come in and tell you that your consumer unit is old and needs replacing and then give you a quote.

I can tell you from here that if you have a fuse board that looks like that its probably due for a change and at that point when you have it tested you might find a few other faults. Don't waste your money as they will charge you an arm and a leg, get a few quotes from local electricians that are registered as domestic intallers under part P.

Whilst a new consumer unit with RCBO/RCD/RCCB protection is advantagous and is safer than you old BS3036 unit as far as i'm aware you are under no obligation to make your old installation comply to the latest edition of the IEE wiring regulations. Bearing in mind that BS3036 fuses are still in the latest edition of the IEE wiring regs but wouldn't comply on a new house. The most important thing with BS3036 rewireable fuses is that you have the correct size fuse wire installed, check them now!
I have a lot of problems with my neighbours, they hammer and bang on the walls sometimes until 2 or 3 in the morning - some nights I can hardly hear myself drilling ;)

Ask them if the person who will be coming to check the wiring is qualified to City & Guilds 2391.

There is no way they will offer a statement that an electrical installation is safe without a proper inspection, because they would be liable if a fault is found subsequently, so all electrical installations will be classed as unsafe and needing remedial work.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.

Is a free visual home wiring check worth £75?
