CDW with Avis when you book with Tesco Clubcard vouchers

Earlier this year we used our Clubcard vouchers to book a week's car hire with Avis in Lanzarote. With two tired kids playing up when we collected the car I wasn't concentrating when I was told in broken English about waiving the excess etc (although I've since looked it up) and ended up paying another £95 for the week.

So my question is... on the basis that Avis obviously charge you in other ways, it is worth using your Tesco clubcard vouchers to book with them? Because I'm pretty sure overall, taking into account the face value of the vouchers we exchanged for deals and the CDW we paid, we didn't come off well at all.

Also consider arranging your own insurances through http://www.insurance4carhire.com/. Annual cover in Europe is less than the CDW you paid on your trip.
  • Yes,they try and sting you when you arrive at the car desk for super CDW,which is basically a rip off at around £100 for 7 days.
This covers the £600 ish excess you might have to pay if having a prang.
The insurance4carhire site given above gives a link to a daily option of around £3 a day to cover the excess.
Your cc would still be debited by Avis, but you could then claim it back at a cost of around £21 for the week instead of Avis's £100.
We have booked a car from Avis at Baden Baden,Germany in march using Tesco vouchers and will cover the CDW excess this way.
I'm not sure if they debit your CC on pick up for the excess, then refund if car ok,or mearly swipe the card and then charge it if the car is damaged .
Can anyone enlighten me on this?

Great link. I guess this applies to wherever I hire the car from as they all seem to have pretty high excesses.

Can't see an option for a daily rate though?
  • The link to the daily excess is below.
It's £3.50 a day including IPT,but covers windscreens and tyres, wheras a lot of the big firms super CDW don't.

Fantastic. Feel really cross now that I got caught out earlier this year.
