Cake of Cheese

Is anyone having a cheese cake? (not the strawberry kind, the cheddar kind!! lol )

I have tried to google local suppliers but it just keeps asking if I mean cheesecake. Google - if I wanted to look for cheesecake, I would have done!!! aaaghhh!!

I have done another search for the local area for cheese suppliers, but wondered if there is anyone in the local area (Burton on Trent, but can travel a bit) who has had one of these at all?

Thanks!

One idea that we were given was to source the cheese yourself.
You could go to your local supermarket and ask how much for a full wheel, then ask the venue if they can provide sundries.

I have spent a bit of time looking into this recently and found if you google "cheese wedding cake" rather than wedding cheese cake...it brings up a few more options

There seem to be several companies that do them and most will send them to you for about £10 postage which is I think quite good...the downside I think ive found is that they seem to start at about £140

Im looking at one for an informal evening reception

Ive spent the last few days in super markets etc pricing up and whilst I have yet to find a round mature english cheddar I THINK IT MAY be perfectly possible to do for well under £100 and then the grape/tomato garnishes etc

I used this site for ideas simply because there is a shop fairly close to me...although it is expensive

For Example sainsburys deli has a round taste the difference stilton that priced out at £20 and a mexican waxed cheddar which was about the same sort of price..im thinking of adding a layer of brie slightly smaller then prehaps something else depending on size..

    Mmmmm, cheese. Awesome stuff.

I can imagine seaching online would be a pain - although you cuold try searching for cheese wheel rather than cake, as that's what cheesemakers tend to call massive cheeses!

I don't know your area, but I would have thought a good local farmers market or farm shop would be a good place to start. Many will include specialist cheesemakers. As cheese keeps well I imagine many cheesemakers would be able to ship your wheels to you :)

I think I may have come across this lot at a food fair, I wonder if they're anywhere near you... http://webdesignstaffordshire.co.uk/leekbrewery/index.php?page=cheeses Their cheeses are stocked at http://www.byrkleygardencentre.co.uk/ which might be close by...

    Wow speedy replies!! Thanks guys!

I didnt think of that - DOH!! I might nip to Morrisons and ask them about wheels. Dont need til next year and although we are having around 120 guests (evening), I'm only going to cater for about 100 with both the cheese and the hog roast we are having.

Whatever is left over, me and the oh will sit and eat on our honeymoon. (cant afford to go abroad, so will be either boating on a friends cruiser, or in the lakes)

We dont have a farmers market in Burton, in fact the market is pretty dire. There is a cheese stall in there, but due to previous history with their produce, I am loathe to go there again! I think the nearest decent market is Lichfield. I might nip there at the wknd if we have time and have a look. There is an AWESOME stall there that sells olives and I always spend too much when I go there!! I think they also do cheese.

Thanks for the website, I wil have a look at that and see if they are at any food shows this year. I will be doing to the Good Food Show at the NEC in November so might get some contacts from there.

I live about 4 miles away from Byrkley Park! I may have to investigate, but I know that they are rather expensive!

I was planning on having a cheese wedding cake (as well as a normal one) and getting the venue to provide bread/crackers/pickles/salad/pork pie etc. However when we discussed this with the guy at our venue he was happy to do it but said that in the past they've found that they don't go down too well with guests and the cheese gets left and all the other stuff disappers rapidly!

I think the reason that the cake may get left is because people are afraid of cutting into it....basically thou if you "cut the cake for pics" early in the evening and then get your venue/server to cut the cheeses into managable portions then the cheese gets eaten...
    going for crackers/bread...with homemade pickles/chutneys

For me its a really good option for the vegetarians and something different to the hot meat rolls....as the vegetarian option the caterer suggested was mushroom, onion and tomato rolls...which doesn't really inspire me that much

We're having a hog roast, so once that is gone they wont have any choice! Anyway, I dont mind eating a few kilos of cheese! I wont have to diet any more!!! lol

I had thought about Costco as well, do they do wheels of cheese? I have just emailed a couple of farm shops and a local deli to see if they will supply at all.

We both love cheese, and considered it, but then seem to have forgotten about it until I saw this thread, so thanks! :D

Having said that, I think the reason we discounted it was cost seemed a lot.... I guess I'll find out again soon!
