AVG Problem

Hi
Downloaded the free anti virus quite a while ago and it was working great,it kept telling me it had expired and for me to buy a newer version which i kept ignoring..my fault i know.
Now i can't download anything,it won't let me save anything to my computer, documents, or anything.I tried yesterday to scan some of my old photos. It won't save them anywhere. The error code it gives me has something to do with Avg.
Ive tried uninstalling AVG but it keeps coming up with an error problem.
Im being made redundant soon,so i really need to be uploading my CV to different places but it won't let me.
Im no computer expert so please be gentle with any advice.
Thanks
Di

Use the 32 bit AVG removal tool
    http://www.avg.com/download-tools

There are better free av programs - AVAST and AVIRA (download from 'filehippo')

As per lots of advice on this site, don't pay!

Avira, Avast and MSE are all free and get good reports so consider a switch. Not sure that AVG is repsonisble for your other problems though. If AVG won't uninstall you can try the remover at http://www.avg.com/gb-en/download-tools which is likely anyway to do a more thorough job.

Do you have a system restore point prior to the computer stopping you doing stuff ?

Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

Thanks for your help but ive tried using the removal tool but it won't let me run it or save it.

Looks like my system restore has been affected to as it's not showing the one we've saved in the past.:(

The error code we get is connected to the avg program.Don't know what to make of it.

reboot and keep pressing F8 to get into SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING and try the removal tool from there

I suspect your machines infected personally. So once AVGs gone -

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM QUICK SCAN then click SCAN
Remove everything thats found (needs to be ticked)
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds
If anything was found then do the exact same but run a FULL scan

    reboot (into NORMAL mode)

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin)

We have seen a few computers over the past couple of weeks with fake AVG Anti-Virus programs on them. Might not be an option, but we pop the infected hard drive in another PC as a additional / slave drive and run the Anti Virus on the infected drive.

Above is the best option to try, If malware bytes doesnt run, rename the .exe file to a random name.
    C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe

Usually, an anti virus that say's 'expired' means the virus data base is not up to date, not the software itself. Just click on 'update' and it will download the latest virus database.
The flags / nags to update to the 'bought' version, is ALWAYS there on AVG......you just ignore it.

The problems with your PC, are more interesting. Where did you get your AVG from?
The thought occurs to me, that if the free AVG had started an database update, then all the other computer processes are frozen, until it's completed its task.
i.e. dealing with photographs whilst the AVG is updating, may have been too much demand on the processor / RAM capacity, or, the processor was trying to perform the first command, to update AVG, before it could deal with the photographs. Just guesswork mind, need greater insight into other things for conclusions.

    Hi
I got the program from a link on here about 18ths ago.It worked great until a few days ago.I couldn't update it cos it wouldn't download anything or save anything.
Now ive got rid of AVG everything is working fine.I can download things again and save things to file.

    It was strange.
