Allianz replacement item insurance, advice please

I bought a hoover from Argos back in September 2008 and I also paid for 3 years 'Argos Direct Replacement Product Cover' insurance.
The insurance covers 'Breakdown replacement cover' and 'Accidental Damage Replacement cover'. The Accidental Damage cover started in September 2008 and expires in September 2011. The Breakdown Replacement cover started in September 2009 (after the 12 months warranty the hoover originally had expired) anyway I've only claimed once (at least a year and half ago if not longer) for a new hoover because the handle snapped and basically someone came out to the house and took the broken one and brought me a brand new replacement. They didn't even ask to see the insurance certificate.
Anyway fast forward to now, I've moved house (the insurance certificate has my old address on it) and on Tuesday the 1st of March I was hoovering upstairs and the hoover literally switched itself off! So I did the usual changed the fuse in case it was that and plugged it back in again and it still didn't work. Tried it in another socket. Nope still dead.
I rang the insurer yesterday who are called Allianz and was asked if I have the original receipt and I said no. Because the last time I claimed I wasn't asked if I had the original receipt and I must have thrown it away (bearing in mind the original receipt would now be 2 and a 1/2 years old anyway) but I do have a bank statement from 2008 showing when I bought the hoover with the amount I paid on it and I also have the certificate of insurance.
They said without the original receipt I couldn't get a replacement! Now I know it says on the insurance certificate that in order to claim I would need to produce both the certificate and purchase receipt in the event of a claim, but I don't have the receipt just the insurance certificate so is it right that I really can't claim for a new hoover? Even though the insurance doesn't expire until September this year.
I do have a proof of purchase, the bank statement, just not the receipt.
Is there nothing I can do to potentially force their hand??
