Hi,
I'm currently in the process of getting car insurance quotes.I am a HGV mechanic and all through my driving years I have been penalised for the job I am in.I don't think that car mechanics are viewed in a very good light when it comes to road tests and generally driving other vehicles.I do feel therefore very miffed to be lumped in with car mechanics when I work on nothing but lorries.I also possess a Class 1 (articulated HGV) licence which should help with discounts but invariably doesn't.Has anyone had similar problems or have solutions ?

Could you describe your job as something else? Not lieing, but maybe fit yourself into a differnt catogry0

how do you know whether they penalise you or not? Have you tried taking the same details on a website for a quote then changing the occupation to different things and seeing what the differences are?
I would agree there does seem to be differences, my current insurer had different values for really broad categories and my job was a combination of three so I picked the cheapest one!
I'd be curious to know if there was much difference for someone who's got a few years no-claims though, I wouldn't expect there to be much.Indecision is the key to flexibility0 -
Thanks for the advise.
Used a screenscraper again tonight using all the same details except my job description.I changed this from motor mechanic to mechanical engineer which is technically the same.
The results were around £20-£30 cheaper for most of the quotes, some were the same and two were more..........very odd !
Think I may have a change of job......on paper anyway !0 -
Could you perhaps be described as a Technical Engineer? Or just an engineer? Only problem with that, is they may assume you work in an office all day and your insurance premium will be cheaper, annoying that isn't it?!?0
