Hi
I recently took out contents insurance with Tesco Bank and read their t and c's and because i have a criminal record i would not be able to become a policy holder with them. I have tried many mainstream insurers like directline and aviva and this is still the case.
In sept 2008 i have a conviction for making off without payment received court fees and a compo claim.
It seems this is affecting me but would most definately want to insure my possessions!!! Any ideas???????????

You will struggle to get cover at all with a criminal record. I would try a broker maybe see if they can help but most insurers avoid people with a criminal record.
Good that your willing to disclose this info, most people probably don't.0 -

Sorry I'm a bit confused about this! How can you have taken out contents insurance with Tesco Bank but your not able to become a policy holder. Doesn't taking out contents insurance mean you are the policy holder?? If not how could you have taken out contents insurance with Tesco Bank??0 -
Try this broker who specialise in people with convictions http://www.fairplayhelp.com/ or this charity who specialise in helping people with convictions find insurance http://www.unlock.org.uk/main.aspx
Do not tell tesco you have a conviction as they will cancel your insurance which will mean you have to declare forever that you have had a policy cancelled which will make your insurance expensive forever. Just ring them up and cancel the policy yourself when you have arranged alternative cover with a company who accept the conviction.
You need to do the same thing with you car insurance.0 -

They will have scrolled through the assumptions box on the website without reading it, then only looked at the paperwork after seeing it.0 -

car insurers should not take into account criminal convictions only motoring convictions.0 -

You could also try this company http://www.homeprotect.co.uk/
The website says they will consider criminal convictions.
I haven't had a policy from them but did get a quote for a relative who was having difficulty getting quotes from mainstream insurers due to flood risk. They didn't take this policy in the end as they managed to negotiate a better rate with their current insurer but it wasn't a bad quote.0 -
The vast majority of motor insurers will ask about non motoring convictions and of these the majority would not want to cover someone with a theft / dishonesty conviction
DL/Churchill only accept motoring convictions, even if a customer discloses criminal convictions they are not taken into account. We have policyholders who are currently residing in open prisons and need the car to drive to work etc before returning to HMP:)0 -

That may be the case for the RBS brands but is not the case for the majority of motor insurers. It would have been wise to have added clarified your previous post that DL, Privilege and Churchill ignore non motoring convictions.0 -
