Turnover can change from year to year if he does a lot of labour only work where the customer pays for materials he will easily stay under the threshold but if he has one renovation job where he supplies materials he can easily get to the vat threshold. Personally I would check him out with HMRC ...

    .

Check what out with HMRC?? His turnover is some £30k under the limit - check it out with your accountant if you are worried (not sure why you would be though!)

I would suggest people go to the "Cutting tax" forum for tax advice
  • I recently had a builder visit our council offices who claimed not to be VAT-registered and for this reason asked if he was exempt from the VAT on his Building Regulations application. I'm not really clued up on the exemptions side of things but I was pretty sure he still had to pay the full amount with VAT on top.

He probably tells his suppliers that he shouldn't have to pay VAT on his purchases either since he isn't registered :rotfl::rotfl:

If you are not VAT registered then you can not bill VAT as a separate part of the bill and can not claim VAT back. It doesn't absolve you from paying VAT on purchases where applicable.
