Google Earth and Google Maps have tools for measuring the distance of routes etc.

    Use http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/

Uses Google's maps, can tell you about elevation as well as distance and you can save your route as well.

ive tried using the satallite view but my points will only take when using roads. My route involves running on a old railway line but when i double click a point it will not mark the distance.

When you get to the point that your route switches to off road, click on the button on the left marked 'Draw route manually (straight lines)' and it will continue the route by measuring to exactly where you click (in straight lines rather than following any features on the map so bear this in mind when trying to go around corners). Alternatively, you can click this button at the start of your route and measure the whole route this way if it is easier.

You can mark the route anywhere you want on Google Maps or Google Earth, in as much detail as you want.
