AA batteries capacity/value for money

Can anyone help me out? With non rechargable batteries how do you assess value for money? They don't seem to list the capacity in mA as they do for rechargables. There is a wide price difference between ultra, high power, extra for example the terms seem completely meaningless.
Is there a website that covers the topic? I need the batteries for a safety critical items i.e. avalanche transceivers and GPS

You can usually find the mah figures by googling. They do not shout them out because the figures aren't that good ! Often a range is given ,probably due to manf. tolerances, eg AA 2275 - 2475 mah.
I read that in US, rechargables were not even advertised for a number of years, due to vested interests.

Specialist marine or camera sites are possibly a good starting point, you will have a hell of a job getting military grade in this country. There is a whether / weather issue, regardless of the price five quid each or fifty quid each you will double the working life of any battery by keeping it at body temp. Cold will kill a battery as quick as it kills a human body.

Have you considered modern rechargeable hybrids like Sanyo's eneloop (there are others)?
They are designed to keep more of their charge much longer that traditional rechargeables which can have a self-discharge rate of 40% a month or more.
Also - I tried various normal rechargeables in a new digital camera but they wouldn't work (presumably the 1.2v was too low). Eneloops were the only rechargeable that worked.
