I'm looking for a handy little netbook purely to work on VPN hooked to company internet based applications.
Whats the current hot favourite at the mo......particularly the durable ones suitable for travel - without the flimsy bits that easily break off and which ones to avoid?

Just got an eMachines EM350. Very impressed with it. Take a look at the Amazon reviews, 10% 4*, 90% 5*, no bad reviews. Having used it for a week now I'm in full agreement.

If you just want a 10" netbook, and have no great need for HD video support, then basically any of the top branded ones with decent battery life: Samsung, MSI, Dell, Toshiba... probably in that order. They are all essentially the same specs, and only differ in build quality, external design, and battery life. Unless it's a dual core CPU, each funny numbered Atom processor gives the same performance as the next (the newer ones are cheaper for Intel to produce... and that's about it).
If you get a decent travel case, then any top branded one will survive travelling.
Simple 10" netbooks
Argos were selling off the MSI U130 and U135 pretty cheap recently (i.e. £135ish), and the Argos outlet sell fully functioning returns with a 12 month warranty. I can't imagine paying full retail cost for a netbook, and have had an MSI U230 from Argos' ebay outlet and have had excellent service. There's no need to pay above £200 for a single core, 10" netbook (unless it has Nvidia ION for HD). Here are some decent priced 10" netbooks:
Samsung N130 6hour battery, £164 Argos clearance
MSI U130 with 8hr battery (2 batteries) £180 saveonlaptops.co.uk

Dual core netbooks for speed
If you want a faster 10" netbook, then this Samsung with a dual core processor & 8 hours battery life is a good price at £230 delivered. It's a pretty good deal imo:

12" netbooks
If you want a 12" model, then aim for <£250 and you can get a decent model. Personally I couldn't handle a 10" screen for long periods, and 12" was just right for a netbook imo. Best thing would be to go into somewhere like Currys, where you can find loads of display models to test. The Lenovo Ideapad 12 looks great, and is capable of 1080p video output:
