Wages cheque bounced

Hi, I didnt know where else to put this, so sorry if its in the wrong place :-(
Basically I cashed a wages cheque in one of the shops in town (I was skint and needed the money asap), but the shop has written to me saying the cheque has returned and that I need to pay them back?
Shouldn't they go after my employer, since it's my wages? Should I ask my boss for the cash to give to them, or get him to send another cheque?
Really don't know where I stand with this :-( Any help is appreciated

I would check with your employer - if the check has bounced it is their responsibility to pay your wages. They are in breach of contract otherwise.
Not sure how cashing cheque places work though. Did they tell you at the time you would have to pay back if the cheque bounced?

'The breach of contract' being my employers contract with me?
They didn't say I'd have to pay it back if it bounced, but I had to sign something to confirm all my details were correct, etc, I bet there was some small print I didn't see :-(All Saints Addict!Saving points for Xmas '12Tesco 836 Boots 8585 Nectar 2710 -

You walked out of the shop with money in your pocket, having given them a dud cheque. There is a contract between you and the shop and you owe them what you took away.
So, you need to get your cheque back from them so you can pursue your employer. There is another contract between you and your employer.
There is no contract between the shop and your employer. You are piggy in the middle.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
You need to chase your boss, the shop will not care why it bounced, it's not their problem.
You also might want to think about getting a new job if you are being paid with rubber cheques!0 -

Have to agree Im afraid. The cotract is between you and the shop, not your employer and the shop. It would not be up to them to chase your employer. Get your cheque back. Have you spoken to your employer yet?:j:):jI am a bankruptcy survivour (10 years ago). It does get easier.:j:):j

The shop doesn't care where the cheque came from - you gave them a cheque that bounced, so you need to give them the money they gave you.
The bigger issue is why the cheque bounced - I'd be onto my employer as soon as humanly possible to find out why.0 -

But I didn't know it was going to bounce - if I did I wouldn't have cashed it.
I can't afford to give the shop back the money then wait for my boss to pay me 'again'. What if my boss says that they've given me my wages and what I chose to do with the cheque was my business?
I've emailed Payroll this morning and waiting on an answer :-(All Saints Addict!Saving points for Xmas '12Tesco 836 Boots 8585 Nectar 2710 -

Its not about wether you knew the cheque would bounce, the fact is YOU cashed the cheque with the shop, therefore YOU are liable for the amount cashed.
How can your boss say they have given you your waged when you have proof they havent as the cheque has bounced?
You need to stop trying to fob off liability here.
If I were you I'd be calling payroll and demanding an answer, I would be waiting on emails etc0 -

You're not helping, I haven't said I'm trying to get out of paying. If it comes down to it I will have to but all I've asked for is advice on how to deal with this because I've got the shop on the phone asking what's going on and I don't know what to tell them. All Saints Addict!Saving points for Xmas '12Tesco 836 Boots 8585 Nectar 2710 -

They did answer to be fair its just you chose not to read it, ring your boss and find out why he didnt pay you and the cheque bounced. Meanwhile speak with the payday company and see when they want their money back.0
