Eon want to install a pre pay meter! I dont!

Eon have told me that my electricity meter is too old and needs replacing, which they'll do free of charge. Only trouble is, they want to instal a pre-payment meter! I've heard these meters are a lot more expensive not to mention inconvenient!
I'm up to date with my bills (£100 in credit in fact!) so can I tell them to chuff off, I dont want a pre-pay meter and if they want to change it, its gotta be a like-for-like!?

    Welcome to the forum.

    Never heard of this before.

Whilst you might be up to date with your bills now, have you a poor record of paying in the past?

This looks a bit sly. Bruce, I guess that Cardew is right that you may not always have been up to date? It looks to me that EoN are trying to make a swap to a prepayment meter of the back of a regular recertification meter change - which should be like for like. If this is the case and your payments are up to date now - even if they have not always been, I think they out of order to do anything other than like for like on a recertification change.

You need to call them and ask them why they want you to have a prepayment meter. It may be that they have got you confused with someone else or that they are just useless. Let us know what they say when you call.

If your meter needs recertifying then it should be a like for like change. The person (system) that will have sent you the letter will be part of the metering side of E.ON (or a 3rd party meter operator) and won't have access to your previous payment history. Are you sure they don't want to fit a Smart meter as this isn't a prepayment meter.

What exactly does the letter say?

Tell them no, you wont accept that & require a like for like exchange.

If they don't like it you can always choose to go elsewhere. A pre payment meter shouldn't be more expensive (as it used to be) these days but probably will be less convenient to you.

Suppliers should offer a range of payment methods not just one. Therefore, if you are in credit I see no reason that you should allow them to impose this upon you (or that any court would grant them a warrant should they threaten attempts to do so)

    Hi bruce-1980,

Just noticed your thread, sorry I didn't reply sooner :o

If this is just a normal stat meter change, it should be like for like as DVardysShadow says, it would also be arranged by the meter operator so they wouldn't have any of your account details (payments, if the account had been in debt etc.)

So to be honest I'm not sure why you have been advised it needs to be a pre-payment meter.

Was it actually E.ON that said you need the new meter? or was it a letter from the meter operator ?Have you contacted them to ask?

    Helena :)

  • EON did that to me having been in credit, the best thing i did was to move to British Gas whilst in credit, once transferred Eon didnt install the pre pay meter and everything is fine now with British Gas
  • BG refused to tell me their cheapest tariffs unless I signed on with them! Everyone else told me their unit prices straightaway!
