Experiences of selling car numberplates?

Though I've browsed this site often, this is the first time I've actually braved registering and posting so apols if I'm covering old ground. I've tried to search to see if this topic has been covered before but can't see anything.

I've been told by one of the numberplate sites that my car reg has some value. I'm now looking at selling my car and wondered whether I help fund a new one if I sold my licence plate separately. Could anyone tell me their experiences of selling their plate, how long it took, who they sold through and how on earth you get a new registration once it's sold.

Thank you for any info!

most of these number plate sites will tell you your plate is worth XYZ,but in reality thats just to get your plate on their books and you may wait ages to sell, unless it is something special I wouldnt bother

out of interest what is the plate

As mention above does your plate look like it spells a name ot even the initials of somthing common etc, if its just a run of the mill reg chances are it wont sell.

Will you get back the transfer fee? No point paying £80+ and then selling it for £20. If it sells at all.

Thanks all. I'd prefer not to post the plate as it would identify me and now I'm here I'll be posting more about my finances so would prefer the anonimity! But yes, it does spell a name - the first bit is one of the RO51/PO51/LU51 type ones and the last three letters spell a word too.

The site said £800, but I do feel a bit "well they would say that, would't they" about it, hence me wondering about other people's experiences.

Mine is a bog standard 51 plate reg that came with the car from new. These number plate dealers will say it's worth £500 is I let them. That doesn't mean there is a buyer ready and waiting, it could sit on their books for ever.

well post the number under your name now, then when you want to post the other stuff make a new name up,we really cannot help without knowing what the plate is

One of the number plate resellers is still trying to sell a plate that I own (they've had it since before I bought it) for £520.

I bought it for £140 inc vat and transfer.
