IN10 Conviction

Hi guys,

I was wondering if someone could give me some advice please?

2 years ago I was convicted of driving without insurance (code IN10).

I was stopped whilst in the drivers seat of a car that was being towed by rope by a family members car. My cousin went to get his car taken out of the impound so he he drove the the car that was towing the car that I was in.

At the time I didn't know that I need insurance for being in a car that was being towed.

My intentions wern't wrong as I was not just driving a car without insurance and I have kept my licence clean since I have passed which was in 2007 and I am 21 years of age.

I don't think it was fair that I got the full 6 points for this as the car was swithced off and I was not driving it because it was being towed by the car infront.

My insurance quotes are very high now because of this. So is there any way I can get the premiums reduced by mentioning all this to the insurance companies?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know this is lengthy so thanks very much for reading.

    No.

Ignorance of the law is not a defence.

Thanks for your simple answer. Btw ignorance has a different meaning to not knowing something.

It was not ignorance as it is a rare case and it was also a set up as the police impound staff let us take the car and then right outside the impound the police pulled us over.

Surely they should have asked us who and how the car would be taken from the impound and who is going to drive it?

    Corrupt law more like.

Why was it impounded in the first case?

It was involved in a crash so they took it for examination and told us to take it out of the impound once they have done their investigation

I know it doesn't help you much now but you should have challenged the IN10.

As you were being towed then if the car that your cousin was driving was insured then his policy would almost certainly cover third party liability relating to trailers, caravans or broken-down cars on tow. As such, as long as the car that you were in was not unhitched on a road or public place then you were not using that car without insurance (as long as it was being towed as it was broken down and not for some other spurious reason).

Go and speak to an insurance broker. They can deal with the underwriters and make a submission on your behalf. That way, a human is looking at the facts and not simply a computer spitting out a high quote due to the IN10 conviction.

mattymoo thanks very much for your kind reply. I spoke to MoreThan recently and they have said to me that they can alter the premium due to the circumstances.

Also thank you raskazz for your helpful information. I should have challenged it but had too many other problems at the time so could not deal with it. The car was just being towed as we just wanted to get it to a garage so to get it started up again. It was attached with a rope.
