Lost £200! :'(

I realise this is probably in the wrong section but I just need to rant :-(

I was getting out £200 from my local cashpoint at the bus station to pay the deposit on a holiday (which I can no longer afford to pay for), in my excitement I just walked away with the card and not the money.

I realised after about 5 seconds, turned around and walked back and asked the man currently using it if there was some money in when he got to it.

He sheepishly said 'No, sorry this isn't working I've got to go' and scuttled off.

90% sure that he took my money, and being able to do nothing about it was borderline degrading, I was mortified.

If you're going to comment and tell me what a !!!!!! move it was and how stupid I am then please save yourself the time because I already know.

Yours angrily,
Ryan. :(

You've pretty much answered for most other people.
I'm sure all will sympathise with you (myself included) but there isn't a lot that can be done and it was a mistake that most have almost nearly made at some point but it is just a shame you was too late.
Can't you get a family or close friend to loan you the cash until you can pay them back or maybe try a small credit limit credit card (dependant on your circumstances).

As ridiculous as it sounds I feel so bloody stupid about the whole thing that I really don't want to tell any of my family or friends about it, they'd lend me it for sure but I hate owing money out, and I can't bear people pitying me.
I promised myself I'd never get a credit card but that could be the only option in terms of saving face and still getting to go on holiday :-(

I'm only 19 years old, and my job in IT Support is still kinda in the training phases. As a result my wage isn't very high at all and £200 is a really big chunk. I know I'm making a big deal out of it which could be insensitive, especially if people have been/are going through BR but I was really looking forward to that holiday!

    Ryan

the only chance you have is if there was CCTV trained on the ATM, it'd show the chap stealing the cash

Has the money definitely left your account? If you are wrong about the guy stealing it the cash would have been sucked back in after a few seconds and would not have been deducted from your balance.

I've waited 24 hours and the money still hasn't returned to my account, besides I was only gone for like 5-10 seconds and most machines have a longer time period before they retract the cash :-(

The bus station does have CCTV and that's the last remaining avenue to retrieving my money, going to explore that after I finish work.

Even if they see the guy that took it, it's my own fault for being a dumbass and they'll probably never find him.

You have my sympathies - I'd be totally gutted to lose that amount of money. If there was evidence of the other guy having taken the money, would he have committed a crime? I don't know the answer, but if someone says yes it may be worth reporting it to the police. Maybe he'll have second thoughts and turn it in.

I know you said you're on a low income, but could you make some cutbacks somewhere by giving up some small luxuries (eg give up smoking/alcohol/takeaways for a couple of months), so you could kind of pay yourself back? This would help me feel better, as then I could feel like I wasn't any worse off than I would have been, after a while.

I'm always late up on a morning and sometimes have to get taxis to avoid being late to work and I spent a ridiculous amount on dinner (I'm a growing boy)

Thank you all for your support + mature input.

only 90% sure? if it's not in your account then definitely he had that money away and is an opportunist thief. Hopefully he will be caught on CCTV.
There is no shame in what you've done, the shame is with the thief. Any decent person would have instinctively shouted out to you to come back.
Best of luck with the CCTV.

Go to the police and ask for help. Taking money which you know isn't yours is theft which is a criminal offence and the area might have CCTV which caught it. You need to do this quickly though, CCTV footage isn't stored for long.

Might be worth double-checking with your bank that the money went out.
