'Upgraded' by demon but now connection problems.

Last week my service was 'upgraded' to ADSL 2+by demon but ever since, I've had problems getting connected to the internet. Their technical support have not really been much help and I'm still waiting for them to 'call me right back to help me change my router setting' from Sunday teatime!

Anyhooo....when I got the letter re the upgrade, I checked for firmware updates for my Belkin router and none were available. My router is a few years old but is ADSL2+ so should be compatible.

I've unplugged my telephone, plugged the router into the BT test socket, connected laptop to router with cable and still no connection. Router control panel says it's connected to the internet, demon tell me they can see a connection to the internet but, I don't have a connection in Vista's network &sharing centre and web pages are not loading! This is what happens morning, afternoons, early evening but, after 10pm I have no problem!! It's weird!

I phoned BT and asked them to test the line....there are no faults on my line.

Is there anything else I can do myself?

Tx

Borrow a spare router and retest with that might be simplest?

Demon's T/S have really gone down-hill over the last couple of years. It is strange that your BB only works at night. I would suggest during the exchange-side part of the upgrade some failed to correctly set the board up properly.

  • The after 10pm thing is a very strange one. It's tempting to pursue issues with your PC in the first instance but unless you've forgotten about some parental locking software you installed which is preventing your access(?):

I believe physical phone lines have a slightly different performance level at night than during the day and this can affect the attenuation which in turn impacts the quality of the connection or indeed if the line can manage one.

Some lines can just about manage for instance a half meg connection on ADSL but can't do anything much with ADSL2+ and the solution is to reconfigure back to ADSL.

But this is something Demon will have to work with you to sort out. If the line passes the so called "line test" it doesn't mean there aren't any broadband issues but Demon are the party who will need to resolve this.

....but only because I kept phoning them back and was 'lucky' enough to finally speak to someone who listened to what I was telling them and then manged to fix the problem. Only 2 days later, my router went bonkers and deleted all setting including my stupidly complicated login details! Thankfully, when I phoned them back for help with that I got the same person and they had me fixed in no time!

So being thoroughly unimpressed with the whole technical support experience and their pricing structure, I'm looking for a new isp.

Demon used to be one of the best ISPs, and it's gone from that to being one of the worst - they can't even be bothered to provide support now between 2000 and 0800! When it works it's OK, but when you get a problem they're absolutely hopeless at sorting it out. Best avoided.
