Freecycle/Freegle does it very well online already (groups in every UK locality), and charity shops will helpfully come & collect large items one no longer wants.

Do it by all means, just consider it a hobby & a learning opportunity rather than a business.

PS find & play with free PHP auction scripts to build experience:

Lol it's nothing like taking on ebay at all. It's more to do with wanting to start up a local site for local people to advertise and sell their unwanted second hand goods. Say for instance i had an old settee i was going to get rid of. The site i intend to start would enable you to freely upload a pic with a small add asking people in the local area if they might be interested in it for a very small amount of money. So rather then chuck it out they would think 'i know i'll stick it on orville's site and see if someone will give me £20 for it" whatever old tat you have someone will always want it. I plan to run it as a hobbie at first and see how it goes. Maybe if/when it becomes popular local buisnesses and maybe some national companies might advertise and i would make money that way. www.wightbay.com that is an example of one local to me now that does very well.

In the unlikely event that it did become popular, you would be in trouble, as you would not be able to cope with the demand, your site would fall over as soon as it became even reasonably popular.

Any large demand and you would have no chance.

It takes real skill, and knowledge to run both the multiple servers required AND maintain a auction site that can cope with heavy demand.
[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.

The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that

There are things like PHPAuction http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpnggpl/ and OpenBay that are open source Aiuction systems. I remember someone set up one of these on a Linux server for an internal charity auction once.
