On the power options box/window when i click on the UPS tab on the 1st part under "status" its all "greyed out" then under the 2nd part that says "Details" it says manufacturer "None" then at the bottom of the box theres a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it that says "The UPS service is currently stopped" Anybody know what this means ?
I have been having probs starting my pc each day it sometimes takes 4-6 times switching it on before it loads and the monitor light stays amber, so i just keep unplugging it from the power outlet and replugging it in till the pc starts and the monitor light stays green, theres no beep from the tower when it doesnt load. So now im wondering if the problem is summatt to do with this "yellow triangle thingy? must add my pc is old about 7 years and i replaced the ram last year from crucial so now ive got 2gb ram . Anyone got any ides please? Im beginning to think that i probably need a new tower.
Thanks

"The UPS service is currently stopped" means that the computer can't detectan uninterruptable power supply attached to your computer. These are normally associated with network servers so if ther is a power failure the battery in the UPS has enough power in it to allow the server to continue to run long enough in order to perform an orderly shutdown.
It sound totally unrelated to your problem.
Your problem sounds like a PSU (power supply unit) fault or a Motherboard fault. The fact that it is intermittent may mean a bad connection (PSU to Motherboard) or even a dry joint somewhere. I've even known power switches (On/Off) switch to go intermittent due to oxidised contacts.
If you can blag a replacement "known working" PSU from somewhere and fit this you can eliminate the PSU side of things.
Just remember to observe static precations!0 -

Thanks for your reply. I think i probably need a new tower as im not techy enough to start taking things apart lol. I did buy a switch cleaner from maplins thinking it might be the power switch at the front of the tower as it felt a bit sticky when i pushed the switch in and it did work ok after i cleaned it with the spray but its gone back to being intermittent, thanks anyway :beer:0 -
It could actually even be the mains lead. A simply test is to swap the mains lead on the tower with the one on the monitor. If the monitor then doesn't fire up or takes time to but the tower powers up fine, its the mains lead. Usually what happens is the contacts in the mains lead get splayed out over time. First time I experienced this it drove me mad trying to find the problem then I remembered what I'd been taught - start at the plug and work back.0
