Wall Mounting (Plasma Tvs)

Hello

Im from the caribbean where I normally do tv installations, cat5e and other telephone installations. Im now in the UK and would like to place my plasma tv (42") on the wall. I've noticed that the wall is a bit "soft"; an "apartment wall". By the looks of it Im not sure if I will drill into someone elses room lol. What tools I need to make sure that the tv wont falls off or torn the wall off?

Regards.
When I was 5, my dad told me that the ice-cream van only played songs when it's out of ice-cream. Cheek!

If it's a plasterboard wall then I'd suggest using specialist plasterboard screws (redi-drives, anchors, or toggles - check the load bearing first). Or see if you can find the timber frame. HTH.

I would not put it onto plasterboard, you need to find the batons and screw into them
  • Definitely find the battens/studs and screw into them. For a larger screen like that I would also use a bracket that lets you span across two studs, rather than just fixing into one.

    a stud wall.
locate the uprights and screw into them.

centres are usually spaced at 400mm.
    Get some gorm.

As above re fixing into the studs. You could make your own fixing plate for the bracket to screw to. Using 1/2" or 3/4" ply cut smaller than the tv but larger than the mounting bracket screw this to the studs. Depending on site conditions you may well be able to screw into three studs instead of two.

You would not then have to buy an oversized mounting bracket but the tv would be prouder of the wall by the thickness of ply.

I used a similar method to mount an 1800mm * 600mm radiator to a stud wall and it has remained rock solid for years.

^^^^ I did the same recently with a 40" tv, but before fixing the ply I used it as a template and cut out the plasterboard from the wall making the ply flush with the wall.
