Alternative to stain block paint?

We had our dining room skimmed recently and we are ready to paint.
Around the chimney alcove and french doors they had to put some metal beads and it was skimmed over.
I understand that with regular metal beads you need to apply stain block before the mist coat and emulsion is applied.
As this is a very small amount of stain block I will need something the size of a tester pot but all I can find is half a litre to a one litre pots which cost anything from £9 to £20 for the Zinsser 123.
Is there any alternative paint to stain block for metal beads? any old MSE technic out there? it's a shame to waste such a big pot for such a small job.

We always use an oil based undercoat (ie thw undercoat) you use on woodwork) instead of stain block before emulsioning over. However, have never stain blocked or otherwise plasterers corner beads.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

The beads generally only need to be primed if someone has sanded through the galvanised finish.
I am a Zinsser BIN fan but if you do have problems just use any old oil based paint over the emulsion and then emulsion over that the next day.
The same goes for water stains.
The advantage of the BIN is a the super fast drying time but it isn't cheap and has a limited shelf life.0
