There's some good stuff on that website, thankyou.0 -
hi Everyone,
I am really keen to have a raised bed along one wall of the house, but am concerned about it creating damp in the walls. Should this be a real concern? Ifso what can I do to prevent the damp? (Especially as the wall I want to build it against belongs to someone else!Man plans and God laughs...Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.0 -
old pallets, give them a coat of wood preservative and they will all look the same0

Just rake the soil up into beds about 6in. high - 1m wide, long beds with a 30cm 'path' between works well. Use a hoe to maintain the edges and to sweep the soil up towards the centre. Once planted the roots of your plants will 'bind' the soil together.
Well, you did ask for the cheapest method.0 -
Sorry - I'm being daft probably... but how will that prevent damp or are you responding to OP?Man plans and God laughs...Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. Yes, it's a real concern. You're not supposed to have anything above the damp course.
Why does it have to be raised? Wouldn't a normal flat bed do?0 -
decking is £2.98 for 2.4 metres at the mo at B+Q - its about 5 inches wide.
i guess local wood merchants can do some other type of wood cheaper?0 -

No it doesn't have to be raised, but the garden is on a bit of a slope so it would help even it out.
I'll go back to the drawing board then... thanks!Man plans and God laughs...Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.0 -
It's not a good idea to use standard pressure treated timber for raised bets for anything other than ornamental crops. The preservatives used will leech into the soil and they are not food safe.0

We used scaffolding boards - they were cheaper than sleepers, the local builders merchant was doing a BOGOF deal, and they were very easy to work with (well, so I was told anyway! My jobs mostly involved making tea that day)Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!0
