There is a possibility that a transaction fraught with difficulties might yield £1,500 more, but who's to say the private buyer might not offer £1,000 less on the day?
Overdraft interest, fees, train travel etc is going to walk away with a couple of hundred.
Make no mistake, if this guy is a scammer and good at it, you will lose the car and be left responsible for the finance.
The private buyer is just not worth the effort, let alone the risk.
Go back to the dealer who offered the £25,000 and try to get another £500, but if he refuses, accept the £25k.
I agree 100% with this, good sound advice.;)0 -
When I bought my motorbike, I went into my bank (Natwest) with the vendor, and transferred the money (£4000) straight into his account as he was also with the Natwest. We got a receipt from the cashier, and by the time we had driven back to his house, it was showing on his online banking details.0

ok i appear not to explained things properly
1. The ONLY guaranteed offer I have is 21.5k trade-in with jaguar. I am not prepared to go this low - I'd rather scrap the whole thing and keep the car. - and I just know you chicken lickins out there are going to suggest I do just that! lol!
2. The 25k is not a firm offer yet, and is from 2 separate 'buying groups' to be honest these sounded dodgey to me at first and at present is only the maximum they would pay for our spec of car. Neither of them has seen the car yet, so their offer could drop on the day also. This is still being persued in the wings and if they come up with the goods before this private chap we would except 25k as 'a bird in the hand' only after I have checked out that they are kosher too.
Anyway I phoned the bank and they said either do a chaps transfer or the bankers draft.
Some good ideas there regarding the finance, thanks - I'll see what the buyer wants to do.

Moving the money isn't a problem if he can send this amount by faster payments. Some can, some can't.
In any case, you're going to have to settle the finance so this is where I'd start. Now if you can do it all in the finance company's, office, you can do the deal there. He can pay the balance via a debit card to the finance company and the remainder to you via faster payments. All you need is a laptop with a mobile internet connection.
If you cannot clear the finance this way, then your finance company will tell you how to do it as without it being cleared, your deal is a non starter.0 -
sorry should have clarified again - they said "go into his bank with him, watch them write the bankers draft and hand it directly to you" it is then guaranteed funds.

And being completely aware of potential problems...look at this from the buyers side.
How many times have buyers been warned not to meet the seller in a place not of his own? You say you suggested it, well if we look at this from the buyers side everyone would be saying be careful.
Problems can be caused by either side. Just because you are the seller and know you are honest doesn't mean every seller is.
Do you have to sell? Are you down sizing or just don't/ can't keep paying for your car?
If you have to sell, then maybe cut your losses and see if another dealer will increase an offer over the 21k. I wouldn't hold my breath for the so-called 25k offers, because we have seen several examples of these great offers suddenly disappearing or being greatly reduced.0 -
Ring jaguar up and say you have a potential private sale of £26.5k to see if they will raise their offer. These things can be negotiated!saffy_sweetie wrote: »ok i appear not to explained things properly

Glad to hear you're going with the bankers draft. That much cash sounds scarey!"Every single person has at least one secret that would break your heart. If we could just remember this, I think there would be a lot more compassion and tolerance in the world."— Frank Warren0 -
I have an idea. Get the finance company on the phone, get the buyer to pay by debit card to the finance company over the phone either the full £26k, and get the finance company to forward you the remainder, or if this is not possible then £5k is a lot less to sort out. Whether this is possible I do not know.0

Who would buy a £25k ono car at a mutual meeting point? Not any legitimate buyer i wouldnt think.
If spending a large sum i would want to know the cars yours registered at your address when you will make
me a cuppa or 3 and let me use the loo.
Also the HPI bit will cause issues. Trusting seller to give you that much in the hope you pay the finance off
before boarding the next flight to spain.
On the other hand your car could be on a ferry or in a container long before the police have finished taking
your statement and your insurance telling you your not covered for fraud and you gave them the keys.
Cant see a car a dealer will retail at £28k being sold for £26.5k £1500 less with little comeback and no warranty?
